The D-Day landings and the subsequent battle for Normandy during June - August 1944 was one of the greatest battle in history. Daily casualty rates actually exceeded those of Passchendaele, which many regard as the epitomy of the horrors of a war of attrition.
The documents in this section are designed to provide a background and higher level perspective of the campaign
| | These items are not of specific to any of the D Day landing beaches but are of general background relevance to Operation Operlord/Neptune and the Normandy Campaign as a whole.
They comprise principally Allied commanders' orders, messages and intelligence documents. Included are several German map summaries. |
| | | Major General Graham's 50th Northumbrian Division landed on D Day on a stretch of the Normandy coast between Ver sur Mer and Le Hammel, just east of Arromanches. Their beaches were codenamed 'Jig' (231 Brigade) and 'King'(69 Brigade). The documents enclosed are principally documents, maps and air photographs made/taken before and during D Day. |
